32 NE films in fray for awards

Prag Cine Awards North East 2018, to be held here next weekend, promises to be a star-studded event with the glitterati of cinema and entertainment industry expected to descend there.

Guwahati: Prag Cine Awards North East 2018, to be held here next weekend, promises to be a star-studded event with the glitterati of cinema and entertainment industry expected to descend there.

Bollywood star Govinda, Assam's Adil Hussain besides Huma Qureshi and other actresses are also scheduled to grace the event.

The awards function will have 32 films in different languages of the region in the fray in 28 categories, chairman-cum-managing director of AM Television Private Ltd, Sanjive Narain, told reporters here on Saturday.

The news meet was attended by actress Nishita Goswami, TV anchor Pranay Bordoloi, vice-president of the organising committee Nayan Prasad and others.

The award ceremony will be held at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) auditorium on May 26 and 27.

Lifetime Achievement Award will be conferred on Kulada Kumar Bhattacharjee.

The popular awards show, instituted by AM TV in 2003, will be held in the city after a gap of five years. Its earlier editions were organised in Bangalore besides Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh and Tezpur in Assam.

Apart from awards for Assamese cinema, films in different languages of the region will get recognition and fame on this platform.

Nominations for best film include Ishu, Village Rockstars and Calendar. Zubeen Garg for Priyar Priyo, Arun Nath for Calendar and Dhananjay Debnath for Chaknoiya have been nominated for best actor (male).

Best actor (female) nominations include Chandana Sarmah for Chaknoiya, Bhanita Das for Village Rockstars and Leishangthem Tonthoi Devi for Ishu.

Rima Das of Village Rockstars, Himjyoti Talukdar of Calendar and Utpal Borpujari of Ishu have been nominated for the best director.

A Jury's Special Mention Award will be conferred on late Munin Baruah for his contribution to Assamese cinema.

Another special award for Global Icon will be presented to Assam-born Debojit Changmai who has made a mark as a sound designer in Bollywood.

Tributes will be paid to eminent director Munin Baruah, star actor Biju Phukan, noted director Abdul Majid and filmmaker Tapabrata Baruah who passed away recently.
