11-member team at meet

Oct. 15: An 11-member team from Kamrup is participating in the state-level competition for National Children’s Science Congress, which began today at Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur district.

The 11-member team comprises eight children — Dhrity Raj Kashyap, Rituparna Kalita, Nikita R.K. Aryan, Himasri Bhattacharya, Priyanka Borooah, Arbi Chaliha, Suman Singh and Harsh Kashliwal, two teachers and district coordinator Tarun Deka.

The state-level congress will be held for three days.

The titles of the projects that the 11-member group will present are:

Bamboo charcoal an alternative fuel for posterity

Multi-purpose spinner wheel

Harness of bio-fuel from elephant grass

Electricity generated by household waste

Electricity generation from used battery with the help of cow dung

Preparation of a model routine by changing school time An eco-friendly duel purpose stove (chullah) and

Rechargeable battery charger

“The students have been selected from the district-level competition which was organised on September 16,” said Deka.

The Kamrup district-level competition was held on the ASEB High School premises in Narengi.

The programme was inaugurated by actor Pranjal Saikia. He appealed to all participants to work for the greater interest of society.

There are altogether 270 participants in the state-level competition at Biswanath Chariali.

Project presentation will be held tomorrow and the day after based on which 26 students will be selected to take part in the national science congress.

The National Children’s Science Congress programme was initiated in 1993.

It provides children, aged between 10 and 17 years, with a unique opportunity to pursue their natural curiosity, stimulate scientific temperament and learn scientific methodology by observation, collect data, experiment and present the findings.

A five-day national science congress will be held on the last week of December in Varanasi.

After scrutiny at the district and state levels, nearly 500 children will take part in the deliberations and science- related activities.
