10 held for gambling, trafficking

Police arrested 10 people on Sunday evening for allegedly running a gambling and prostitution racket at a city lodge.

Guwahati: Police arrested 10 people on Sunday evening for allegedly running a gambling and prostitution racket at a city lodge.

Prabir Dey, Chandan Prasad, Rajib Choudhury, Amit Surana, Anil Maheshwari, Kamakhya Pradhan and Amit Pandiyar were arrested for running a gambling den while Nitin Das and Manik Paul were arrested along with a woman on charges of trafficking.

The accused were arrested from Sri Ram Lodge, located near Bora Service bus stop on GS Road.

"We carried out raids and apprehended 10 people. They will be booked under sections of the public gambling and immoral traffic prevention acts," officer in-charge of Paltan Bazar police station, Dharani Barman, said.

In another incident, Satgaon police recovered 3.23 grams of heroin from Neelkamal Path in Hatigaon. The operation was carried out in the rented house of a drug peddler, Kunjabati Singh alias Devi, 55, who was detained on Saturday along with two other peddlers, Mushtaf Ali and Akhtar Hussain.

On Saturday, police recovered 3.26 and 3.61 grams of heroin from two different places in Panjabari. Police said the recovered narcotic was valued at more than Rs 1 lakh. On Sunday, the police seized the drugs kept in 10 containers.

The trio were booked under Sections 21B (punishment for contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations) and 29 (punishment for abetment and criminal conspiracy) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and taken in police custody for three days.
