Robert Downey Junior stars as the beloved veterinarian in Netflix’s Dolittle, based on the title character created by Hugh Lofting. The film is primarily inspired by Lofting’s second Doctor Dolittle book, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922). Robert Downey Jr. stars as the title character, alongside Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen. Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, voice the many animals in the film.
“I came across this script that Tom Shepherd had written for Dolittle and I was just like, God, it’s such a good idea. I felt myself living [at a time] where everybody just seemed to be screaming at each other across the aisle. I was like, here’s a superhero, if you will, whose superpower is listening. His superhero superpower is empathy and I thought that’d be a great character to have today,” director Stephen Gaghan had revealed last year.
