For most Bengalis, the Kali Puja celebrations begin with ‘Shyama Sangeet’ playing one after the other. And if there is one devotional song that gets played on repeat at every puja pandal, it is Pannalal Bhattacharya’s ‘Shyama Maa ki Amar Kalo’. The song beautifully captures the devotees’ love and affection for goddess Kali. The lyrics touch upon the incredible beauty of the goddess, who is like a mother to her devotees and leads them to spiritual enlightenment. And of course, bringing it all together is Pannalal Bhattacharya’s impeccably soulful voice. There is no other song that immediately gets us nostalgic and into the Kali Puja mood like this one does.
