If you are drawn to experiencing the cultural heritage of Bengal, just drive 48km away from Kolkata and you will find yourself at prominent Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s house in Deulti. Sarat Smriti Mandir is now a house museum of sorts — all with his used furniture — and the home where the author spent 12 years of his life. Do check if it’s open before visiting on Holi or you can simply lose yourself in the quaint and serene surroundings of the village. Situated on the banks of the Rupnarayan river, this rural village offers a mystical escape from busy city life. Whether you’re looking for a quiet romantic getaway or seeking inspiration, a day trip to Deulti is just perfect for you. After all, this is where the stories of Devdas, Mahesh and Dena Paona were born, making it an ideal place to get your creative juices flowing. Make sure to explore the other architectural and historical locations this rural getaway has to offer. Since Deulti is quite close to Kolaghat, you can stop by at either Azad Hind or Sher-e-Punjab to enjoy some dhaba food on your way back home.
