Revolutionary Jatindra Nath Das, better known as Jatin Das, was born on this day. He had joined the Anushilan Samiti, which believed in armed struggle. He had also participated in Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement.

In November 1925, Das was arrested for his political activities and jailed in Mymensingh. In June 1929, he was arrested again for his role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case and imprisoned in Lahore Central Jail. Das had collaborated with Bhagat Singh and other members of Hindustan Republican Socialist Association. In the jail, Das began a hunger strike on July 13, 1929, to protest against the ill treatment of political prisoners. He died after 63 days, on September 13. His body was received at Howrah station by Subhas Chandra Bose. The final journey was attended by huge crowds, possibly attended by lakhs.
