On this day Gabriel, a ship launched in at Calcutta in 1794, was reported lost in Red Sea. It had been wrecked during the British military campaign to the Red Sea in 1801.
Gabriel had stayed east of the Cape of Good Hope, except for at least two voyages for the British East India Company. The ship was built for the cotton trade. It had sailed from Diamond Harbour in 1796 for England. It made another voyage from Bengal to England in 1799. In the intervals, it was engaged in local trade.
In 1801, Gabriel was part of General David Baird’s expedition from India to the Red Sea to support General Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria. It was wrecked in 1801 in the Strait of Jubal at the entrance to the Gulf of Suez. All the crew and passengers survived and were transported to Cosseir (El Qoseir).
