On this day, Surya Sen and his group of revolutionaries raided the Chittagong armoury. This remains one of the most famous episodes of the Indian freedom struggle. It was the result of an elaborate plan that would require the revolutionaries to act in a co-ordinated way to capture the weaponry and destroy the communications system, so that Chittagong would be isolated from the rest of British India.

The British Indian army trapped a group of the revolutionaries a few days later in Jalalabad Hills. Twelve of them were killed in the battle that followed.

Sen was captured in February 1933 and was put on trial. He was executed in January 1934.
