Sahebzada Wasif Mirza, 87, the great grandson of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Awadh, passed away on January 25, his family said.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters.

“My father (Wasif Mirza) was the son of Prince Ghazanfar Mirza, who was the grandson of Akhlin Ara Mumtaz Begum, one of the wives of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah,” said Shehanshah Mirza, younger son of Wasif Mirza.

Wasif Mirza, who was a businessman and spent all his life in Kolkata, was buried at Shia Burial Ground on North Sealdah Road in north Kolkata on Wednesday.

He died at his home —Wasif Manzil — in Park Circus in south Kolkata. “My father was passionate about Kolkata and the state and he never wanted to leave the city,” said Shehanshah Mirza.
