Two accidents in the city on Sunday left six persons injured.

The first accident occurred near the Chingrighata crossing in east Kolkata early on Sunday, when an allegedly speeding car heading for Sector V from EM Bypass rammed into a pillar of the New Garia-airport Metro viaduct, police said.

All four persons in the car, including the driver, were injured.

Eyewitnesses have reportedly told the police that the car swerved dangerously to the left while driving down Salt Lake Bypass towards Sector V around 4.30am.

“The car’s front was smashed but the windscreen was intact,” said a senior police officer.

Jolted from sleep by the sound of the crash, a few residents of the area rushed to the site and rescued the injured. The four were taken to a hospital nearby. The car was later towed away.

Hours later, an SUV travelling down APC Road towards Entally in central Kolkata hit an app cab near Taki Boys’ High School, a venue for Sunday’s Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET), triggering a pile-up.

The app cab moved ahead and hit another car, which in turn dashed a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, fell on the road.

The series of collisions left guardians of TET examinees, who were waiting outside the school, alarmed. The police said one of them alerted an officer near the spot about the accidents.

The app cab driver was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital and the motorcyclist to ESI Hospital in Sealdah. Jogendra Sharma, the driver, was admitted to the hospital.

The motorcyclist, identified as Subhasish Bhattacharjee, was discharged after treatment.

“The accident took place around 1.45pm on APC Road. We have arrested the driver. The car has been seized and will undergo tests on Monday,” said an officer of Amherst Street police station.

“The road had lighter traffic on Sunday. More persons would have been injured had it been a weekday,” the officer said.
