The shraddh of the first-year student at Jadavpur University who died early on Thursday will be performed at his home in Nadia’s Bogula on Monday.

The student, a minor, was allegedly thrown from a second-floor balcony of the JU Main Hostel by some senior residents late on Wednesday. An investigation is on to find out whether he had been ragged.

The bereaved parents and brother, who have been staying at a relative’s house since the death, will go home on Monday morning to perform the rituals, said a relative. Relatives and friends will accompany them.

Family sources said a number of students and teachers from the school in Bogula where the boy studied would attend the shraddh.

“It was an unnatural death. As advised by our family priest, the final post-death rituals will be held on Monday. It is quite an unbearable situation for us. The condition of the boy’s mother is very concerning,” said a relative.

“She is in trauma and has been weeping inconsolably. She is falling unconscious frequently,” the relative said. Doctors have visited her several times since Thursday.

“It will be very difficult to take her home for the last rituals of her son. She has also been suffering from convulsion. If we fail to bring her out of the current mental state, doctors fear the convulsions will have a serious impact on her brain,” another relative said.

“The torture and brutality the boy had suffered would make everyone cry.”

The victim’s younger brother, a student of Class X, is having a tough time taking care of his parents.

On Sunday morning, the mother broke down before the adviser to the West Bengal Commission of Protection of Child Right and requested her with folded hands to ensure that the culprits are punished.
