Sector V will soon get a town square of its own at the EP-GP Block which already has a host of restaurants, pubs, shops and a mall.

The town square is being modelled around pedestrian plazas that are commonly seen in Italy, Belgium and the United Arab Emirates among other nations. It will be a place for community gatherings as well as a recreation centre for both office-goers as well as visitors to the tech township.

The square is being developed by the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) and the work is almost complete.

The stretch is around 400-m long and vehicles will not be allowed to ply through it, an NDITA official said.

According to a senior NDITA official, the square will have the provision to let emergency vehicles like fire engines and ambulances pass through whenever required.

There will be a small raised platform that can be used as a stage by musicians, stand-up comics as well as authors who can have book signings and discussions apart from a host of other cultural activities. Seating arrangements too are being constructed and board games like chess will be available.

There will be a few food and beverage as well as trinket stalls at the square.

“We are trying to provide a place where people can unwind and relax. Although Sector V comprises mostly office buildings we want to add some flavour to this area so that not only people who come here to work have something to do but also visitors here can engage in some activities,” said a senior NDITA official.

According to him, the place for the plaza has been chosen after taking into consideration the fact that vehicular traffic movement in Sector V will not get hampered in any way if the portion of the road is converted into a pedestrian-only zone,” said the official.

A joint inspection of the site was carried out a few days back and the construction of the square is expected to be completed by next month.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to inaugurate the plaza by April,” the official added.

The Walking Street and the City Square in neighbouring New Town, which are pedestrian-only zones equipped with play furniture and food stalls, are quite popular among residents.
