A doctors’ group has written to the state health secretary alleging that residents of the New Girls’ Hostel of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been facing “ragging, threatening and intimidation” by some seniors.

The email sent to Narayan Swaroop Nigam, the health secretary, by the West Bengal Doctors’ Forum mentioned that “if such things are not curbed at the earliest, the situation might get worse”.

“We would like to inform you that similar events have been reported by the lady students of New Girls Hostel at RG Kar MCH,” the email mentioned while referring to complaints of ragging by residents of the boys hostel of the medical college.

A group of students of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital lodged a complaint of ragging with Tallah police station against some senior students on Wednesday.

The complaint at Tallah was lodged hours after some residents of the RG Kar Medical College’s hostel in Maniktala filed a complaint of “ragging”, “mental torture”, “harassment” and “intimidation” against 13 senior students early on Wednesday.

Nigam told The Telegraph on Friday evening that “the email has been forwarded to the state’s director of medical education”.

“An inquiry will be conducted,” he said.

An official of the hospital said that an email alleging ragging was sent to the college principal too.

A doctor from the forum said that one student has complained about a few seniors.

“Our email to the health secretary is based on that complaint. We want him to ensure a fair probe and punishment of the guilty,” said the
doctor.

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has witnessed protests and counter-protests by students over the transfer of the college’s last principal.

The new principal has joined the hospital but is yet to start working from the principal’s chamber because of the protests.
