Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, has requested for contribution from alumni and others to raise Rs 6 crore “because a number of edifices in the hostel are in pressing need of reconstruction” and equipment for some of its laboratories need to be purchased.
“The earning dipped amid the pandemic as the college reduced the hostel fees. The support from the funding agencies, including UGC, have been on the wane over the past few years,” said Swami Ekachittananda, the principal of the Narendrapur college.
“The chemistry department requires an NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) for the pursuit of excellence. On the other hand, a number of edifices…. As a matter of fact, students of these buildings are facing a lot of hardships in recent times….. Under these circumstances the college appeals to its respected and beloved alumni and donors for rendering financial support,” says a notice signed by Swami Ekachittananda, the principal of the Narendrapur college.
Swami Ekachittananda said they are required to carry out urgent maintenance projects in the hostel buildings, failing which students will find it difficult to stay in a residential campus.
“Water is leaking through the roof. We have to start renovation of Shri Gouranga Bhavana and Brahmananda Bhavana, along with the adjacent dining hall,” he told Metro.
The maintenance of the college building, the annex building and Swami Lokeswarananda auditorium “is also a challenge that deserves due attention”, the notice says.
The notice says: “At this juncture we need to focus on carrying out maintenance projects, both in the college and in the hostel buildings as an integral part of worship of ‘Chhatra-narayanas’ (in service of the students)”.
Metro had reported in December, the principal of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, said waning contribution from donors was affecting the college’s ability to provide economic assistance to underprivileged students amid the Covid-induced financial crisis.
Trader arrested for duping bank of Rs 2 crore
A trader was arrested for allegedly duping a bank of around Rs 2 crore on Friday.
The accused has been identified as Rajib Chitlangia, a resident of Lake Town.
“Chitlangia had taken a loan of Rs 2 crore from the bank submitting documents of his office — Chitlangia Trading Corporation at Canning Street — in 2016. But he failed to repay the loan within a stipulated time of five years. After he stopped paying the instalments, the eastern zone head of the bank reported the matter to us,” said an officer of Lake Town police station.
Police arrested Chitlangia from his Lake Town home on Friday night. He has been arrested under sections of cheating, fraud and forgery. Chitlagia was produced before the Bidhannagar court on Saturday.
