He joined the order in 1956 at Belur Math. Nine years later, he received sannyasa diksha from Swami Shankarananda.

During his long life as a monk, Swami Shivavratananda had served the order at various centres.

He had participated in the relief and rehabilitation work in Morvi in Gujarat following a devastating flood in August, 1979.

“For the last few years, he had been living a quiet life at Belur Math,” said a monk.
