Kolkata began this week with an overcast sky and heavy downpour. The sky started to clear from Wednesday morning. But the dry spell will not last, according to the Met office. Another cyclonic circulation has formed over east-central Bay of Bengal.

The new system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal on Saturday, according to the forecast of the India Meteorological Department on Thursday.

According to the forecast, fairly widespread showers and isolated heavy rainfall over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal may be expected from September 18 to 20.

This is the second monsoon system that has formed over the Bay of Bengal in quick succession this week.

The depression that drenched the city causing waterlogging at several places in the first couple of days this week has reached Madhya Pradesh now. It passed over Kolkata on Tuesday morning.

Around noon on Friday, the IMD Kolkata website put out an alert for thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rainfall for a couple of hours.
