Several parts of Kolkata were waterlogged on Wednesday morning following the overnight rain. By the evening, water receded from most places.
“As it did not rain much in the latter part of the day, the water drained out faster,” said an engineer of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The MG Road-Central Avenue crossing, Sahapur Road (which connects New Alipore and Taratala) and Ibrahimpore Road in Kidderpore, among others, were under ankle-deep water.
Parts of Bhowanipore, including Elgin Road and Heysham Road, were waterlogged in the morning.
But the situation was under control in areas along EM Bypass, which are known for inundation. There was ankle-deep water in Mukundapur in the morning. By the evening, water receded from most places.
New Garia cooperative was still flooded in the evening.
The stretch near Avidipta was, however, still waterlogged in the evening.
“The rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was spread out over a long period. Hence the waterlogging could be avoided. The drainage system didn’t get overwhelmed and had time to drain out the water,” said an engineer of the KMC’s drainage department.
The maximum volume of rain — 132.1mm — between midnight on Tuesday and 2pm on Wednesday was recorded at the CPT canal drainage pumping station of the KMC in Taratala.
The Mominpur drainage pumping station recorded 115mm of rain, Jinjira Bazar station recorded 118mm and the Behala Flying Club station recorded 112mm of rain.
Outside the Kolkata municipal area, the situation worsened in some pockets. At Pailan Park, about 4km from Joka, which has remained waterlogged since September 20, the water level rose by 1ft.
“I had to skip office today because the water level has risen following the overnight rain that continued till Wednesday afternoon,” said a resident of Pailan Park.
Ashwininagar in Baguiati and its adjoining areas went under water on Wednesday as the Bagjola canal overflowed.
There were several breaches on the canal banks, because of which a number of cars and two-wheelers stalled while trying to negotiate the flooded stretch.
