Durga Puja is likely to be bright and sunny only till Saptami, October 12. Ashtami, Navami and Dashami (October 13-15) are likely to be cloudy and rainy, the Met office said in its Puja forecast on Wednesday.
“A system is brewing far away in the north Andaman Sea. It is likely to take the shape of a low-pressure area around October 10. It is likely to intensify and head in a north-western direction towards south Odisha and northern coastal Andhra Pradesh over the subsequent four to five days,” said a Met bulletin.
The Bengal coast is unlikely to be the target of the system. But like most systems in the fag end of the monsoon, the latest is also tipped to be a strong one.
“The outer band of the system is likely to trigger moderate rain in the coastal districts of Bengal, including Kolkata, along with strong gusts of wind,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.
The run-up to the Puja is likely to be bright and sunny. The Met office has predicted “fair weather, with very little chance of thunderstorms” from October 9 to 12.
“Even on October 13 (Ashtami), the first half can remain sunny. But the clouds will start appearing in the afternoon and the showers are likely to start at night. But October 13 and 14 are likely to be consistently cloudy, with multiple spells of rain,” said Das.
The system is likely to start as a low-pressure area. But weather scientists have warned of a possible scale-up.
