‘Green walks’, modelled on heritage walks, will be organised in New Town.

As part of the initiative by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), people joining the walk will be taken on guided tours to pockets of the township boasting a variety of flora.

The walks are likely to start towards the middle of November, officials said.

NKDA chairman Debashis Sen, who has conceptualised the walk, said many people think that New Town is all about smooth, wide roads, swank offices and high-rise residential complexes.

“Through the walks, we want to show there are many green areas in New Town that are hidden from plain sight. People possibly cannot see them on their way to office or during a single visit to New Town,” said Sen.

“New Town’s Eco Park — a 480-acre green campus with a 100-acre water body in the middle — is extremely popular among Kolkatans as well as those who come here from districts during winter. But there are other places, too, that are equally green, but many are not aware of them,” he said.

Sen said the participants will be taken to the tree library, where each tree has a plaque bearing information such as the name of the species, properties, usage and how much oxygen it generates.

The tour will also touch the tall tree nursery as well as several of the 50-odd parks where the NKDA as well as private players have carried out drives to increase green cover.

“We will also take the walkers to the Red Munia ground and some other spots where winter migratory birds arrive,” Sen said.
