Metro services were disrupted for close to an hour during the peak evening rush on Tuesday after an alleged suicide bid at Jatin Das Park station.
“A woman jumped in front of a New Garia-bound train at Jatin Das Park station at 6.09pm,” said a Metro official.
A power block had to be taken before the rescue operations began. The woman was rescued alive, said the official.
The carrier was forced to run truncated services while the rescue operation was on.
In the north, trains ran between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations. In the south, trains ran between Tollygunge and New Garia.
The stations have a provision for trains to switch tracks.
“Normal services resumed at 8.41pm,” the carrier said.
But a cascading effect lingered for a longer time and trains were overcrowded even after the resumption.
People returning home from work had a torrid time. Many waited for transport outside stations like Rabindra Sadan and Kalighat.
“I waited for over 15 minutes at Kalighat station. Then I came out and booked an app cab. There was a surge in the fair and the cab came after another 10 minutes,” said Swagata Basu, who was headed home to Garia.
Suicides and suicide bids have for long plagued the city’s North-South Metro corridor. The East-West Metro has platform screen doors that prevent suicide bids.
