A man who had allegedly impersonated an IPS officer posted in the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was arrested from his south Kolkata home on Thursday on charges of impersonating a government servant.

The accused, identified as Manimay Mandal, had been writing to the Election Commission of India, the state election commission and the governor house about his views on the last Bengal Assembly elections, police said.

Officers said they received a complaint from the security office of the Bengal governor citing multiple communications from this man. A case was registered with the Hare Street police station in north Kolkata on the basis of the complaint in March 2021.

The probe was handed to the detective department in Lalbazar. “We started investigating the allegation and found out the identity of the person who was sending letters to the Election Commission of India, the state election commission and the office of the governor. He turned out to be an imposter,” said an officer.

Mandal was arrested at his home on Kankulia Road off Golpark in south Kolkata and booked for charges of cheating and impersonation. An officer said Mandal claimed that he is a medical practitioner. His claims are yet to be verified.
