Firefighters, pressed into service, used water jets to “immerse” the idols of Hazra Park Durga Puja Committee after a portion of the idol broke while being lifted onto the trailer for immersion. It was an unfortunate Dashami. The incident happened late on Friday night.
Speaking to the media, state minister Sobhandev Chattopadhyay said, “The Hazra Park Puja is controlled by the employees of Kolkata Corporation and the idol was about 20 feet tall. While lifting the idol, a portion of it broke."
The 80-year-old Puja’s theme was Tandav and it had attracted a huge crowd and was also highly lauded. However, the festivities ended on a sad note after it fell inside the pandal and broke.
Fearing that the remaining idol would fall apart, the organisers informed Sobhandev’s son Sayandeep Chattopadhyay and the needful was done.
Along with the idols of Hazra Park, Tala Pratyay and Rajdanga idols were also “immersed” in the same manner.
