Fake police officer held for false job promise

A man has been arrested for allegedly posing as an officer of the special branch of Kolkata police and cheating a job aspirant, police said.

Officers of Baranagar police station in north Kolkata said they had received a complaint from Rathin Mullick, a resident of the area, alleging that Aniruddha Dutta, 53, a resident of MN Road in Baranagar, had taken several lakhs of rupees from him after promising him a job in Kolkata police.

Dutta was arrested from his home on Monday. A police uniform and a fake identity card was seized from him, the police said.

“Dutta used to flaunt the police uniform and flash the fake identity card while promising people jobs in the police department,” said an officer of Baranagar police station.

Dutta has been booked under IPC sections related to cheating, fraud and forgery.

A senior officer of the Barrackpore police commissionerate said aspirants and others need to know that one has to qualify in multiple rounds of tests to get a job in the police department.

“In case someone asks for money, that should be reported to the police,” the officer said.
