The sky was cloudy in Kolkata throughout Thursday, barring a brief sunny spell in the afternoon.
Some parts of the city also got light rain. The Met office recorded around 10mm of rain in Alipore.
A Met official said Friday was also likely to see a similar weather in Kolkata. The sky will start clearing from Saturday, paving the way for the incoming north-westerly winds that are tipped to drag the mercury down slightly, according to the Met forecast.
“A low-pressure area has formed over the south-west Bay of Bengal, off the Tamil Nadu coast. A trough of low-pressure extends from the system to the north-west bay of Bengal, near the Bengal-Odisha coastline. The trough is behind the clouds and rain,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.
“The impact of the trough is limited to the coastal districts of Kolkata, South 24-Parganas and East Midnapore.”
That system has weakened considerably but the trough has brought clouds over the city, said the Met official.
The trough was likely to become “less-marked” from Saturday, the forecast said.
The sky is tipped to start clearing from Saturday. The cold and dry north-westerly winds from the upper reaches of the country are likely to enter Kolkata and drag the mercury down.
“As the moisture level in the atmosphere dips, the north-westerly winds will get easy passage to the city,” said Das.
A cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal had led to cloudy and gloomy conditions in Kolkata at the start of this week.
