The Celsius in Kolkata has gone a couple of notches down because of a rise in the moisture level in the air. The same moisture has led to sweaty conditions and a rise in the discomfort index.
However, the moisture level is not sufficient to cause a spell of rain or a squall, said a Met official.
The next few days are likely to be similar, according to the forecast. On Thursday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata was around 33.5 degrees Celsius.
The minimum relative humidity was over 50 per cent.
On Monday, the maximum temperature was close to 37 degrees. The minimum relative humidity was around 20 per cent.
“Over the next couple of days, the maximum temperature is likely to be in the range of 34 degrees. But the sky will remain partially cloudy and the conditions sweaty,” said a Met official.
“Loads of moisture have been flowing from the Bay of Bengal towards north Bengal and northeast India, via the coastal belt of Bengal. As a result, Kolkata is also getting some moisture,” said G.K. Das, director of India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.
While north Bengal is getting rain, Kolkata is getting only weak clouds that are partially blocking the sunlight. Hence, the sweaty condition and slight drop in the Celsius.
A resident of Kasba in south Kolkata drove to an office in Chowringhee in the city’s central part on Thursday morning. From where he parked his car, his destination was a 10-minute walk.
“The back of my shirt was wet by the time I reached the office,” he said.
