Businessman shot at near Gorky Sadan in attack by 15-18 men

Police suspect it to be a case of business rivalry

A businessman was shot at near Gorky Sadan in the heart of Kolkata in the early hours of Monday after 15-18 men on motorcycles allegedly stopped his car, police said.

Pankaj Singh, a resident of Howrah, was returning home with a few friends past midnight after attending an invitation when the bikers stopped his car on AJC Bose Road near Minto Park.

The gang first assaulted Singh after he stepped out of his car. Then, one of them pulled out a gun and allegedly shot him, hitting his right hand, the police said.

Police have not yet made any arrests in the incident. Singh is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, the cops said.

“It seems to be a matter of business rivalry,” an officer of the Shakespeare Sarani police station said.

“We are talking to the eyewitnesses as well as his friends who were with him. The footage of the CCTV cameras in that area is being checked. Our investigation is on. The businessman is stable at the moment," he said.
