Pallavi Dey, a Bengali television actress, was found hanging in her apartment in Garfa off Jadavpur in south Kolkata on Sunday morning.
Police said they have detained a friend of the 25-year-old actress with whom she had shifted to that apartment less than three weeks ago.
Pallavi, who has acted in several Bengali serials, was taken to hospital where she was declared dead, the police said.
The caretaker of the building where Dey lived with her friend has told the police that he heard the friend screaming for help. On reaching the apartment, the caretaker found him holding on to the actress’s legs.
“The caretaker saw the actress hanging from the ceiling with a bedsheet,” an officer said.
Nilu Dey, the victim’s father, said his daughter had last spoken with her mother on Saturday afternoon, when she called her up for a recipe. “How could a girl who wanted to know a recipe could commit suicide like that? There is definitely more to this,” he said.
