The ILS Hospitals, Salt Lake, has introduced an advanced robotic surgery for procedures of the abdomen that will allow clearing tissues that were inaccessible in conventional laparoscopic surgery and help eliminate a disease better, a doctor of the hospital said.
The advanced robotic surgery will provide a greater degree of precision.
The robotic arms can reach far-reaching parts inside a person that is not possible in conventional laparoscopic surgery, said Aruna Tantia, director & head, department of obstetrics & gynaecology & minimal invasive gynaecology, ILS Hospitals, Salt Lake.
The robotic arms are able to reach tissues that are deep under, she said. Only 2-dimensional vision is available in laparoscopic surgeries, whereas in the newly introduced advanced robotic surgery, 3-dimensional vision will be available.
“In terms of detection and total clearance of a disease, this robotic surgery is much better,” she said.
Tantia said the advanced robotic surgery is very useful in cancer surgeries as well as in endometriosis, where the disease spreads to neighbouring organs. Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissues that line the inside of uterus grow outside the uterus.
“It can be picked up very easily by this advanced robotic surgery and clearance is better,” said Tantia.
“In endometriosis, there are a lot of deposits. If all the deposits can be cleared away from all over the bowel and uterus, which is possible in the advanced robotic surgery, the patient has a better outcome,” she added.
Myomectomy surgeries can be done by the new system, too, she said.
“A patient can have surgery in the morning. She can start moving in the evening and can be discharged the next working. Someone can join office within two days of the surgery,” said Aruna.
The cost of the advanced surgery is about Rs 80,000 more than a laparoscopic surgery, per case, said Tantia.
The same robotic arm can rotate clockwise and anti-clockwise, which a human hand with a laparoscopic instrument will not be able to do.
This helps in better clearance.
