Officers of Kasba police station said Vishal Chowdhury, a resident of Ballygunge Place, was pursuing a chartered accountancy course. The pillion rider is a CA student, too.

The two-wheeler was heading towards the Ruby General Hospital crossing on EM Bypass, the police said.

The scooter crashed in front of 219 Rajdanga Nabapally around 11am.

An officer of Kasba police station said Chowdhury was wearing his helmet when his scooter crashed into the median divider.

“It is not clear how or why he lost balance and the two-wheeler crashed into the median divider. He was wearing a helmet but apparently that was not enough to save him from fatal injuries,” said the officer.

Police sources said Chowdhury suffered injuries to his neck and spine that could have caused his death.

He was taken to a private hospital along EM Bypass where he was declared
dead.

The two-wheeler was impounded by the police and will be sent for a mechanical test.

“It is yet to be ascertained if the two-wheeler developed a snag or if the accident was because of a human error,” said the officer.

An officer of the traffic department said CCTVs installed in the neighbourhood were being analysed for more details about the crash.
