After wowing Mumbai with a line of high jewellery unveiled through a fun show at The Oberoi in December, Sabyasachi Mukherjee is all set to debut another strikingly different range of high jewellery at the iconic Bergdorf Goodman in New York.
“Jewellery is a business we are very serious about. We are building the brand, we are being very mindful about quality, very mindful about design. You know the brand has done very well. In February the entire jewellery salon of Bergdorf Goodman is going to be converted into a Sabyasachi experience... with the jewellery in all their show windows…. So the jewellery story is beginning to grow bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger. So now it’s not only Indian celebrities, non-Indian celebrities are also wearing our jewellery. And the customer base is becoming stronger and stronger,” Sabya had told t2 after his show in Mumbai.
Sabyasachi will unveil his latest collection of high jewellery in partnership with Bergdorf Goodman, on February 8, at the Jewelry Salon at 754 Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Blending “Indian heritage crafts with north Calcutta goldsmithing and disrupting the hierarchy of precious gemstones” has resulted in a collection that is intrinsically Indian in essence yet truly global in appeal, bearing testament to the designer’s signature design aesthetics. “I’ve been thinking about exoticism — India and the Moulin Rouge, French and Bengal savoir-faire. Marrying the classic with the outrageous, from sombre evening pieces to head-turning statement jewellery. Conjuring tigers, elephants, palms, berries and botanicals — crafted in spectacular gemstones. The precise geometry of watchmaking and the graphic strength of Byzantine mosaics, the symmetry of Mughal gardens challenged by the asymmetry of modern punk and confidence of Bengali craftsmanship. This is a kaleidoscopic collection with an unexpected whimsy,” says Sabya of the collection.
The collection showcases exquisite high jewellery pieces, that includes The Byzantine Cravate inspired by menswear tailoring for women and Gustav Klimt’s Golden Phase. The Moulin Rouge Suite brings together jewellery crafts and aesthetics from Medieval, Byzantine, Georgian, Victorian, Italian and Bengal Renaissance movements. The Bagan Necklace is made in homage to the traditional garden necklace from Bengal, which celebrates the finest of the region’s karigari as well as the plenitude of tropical flora and fauna.
