It could have been an ‘awkward equation’, as host Karan Johar put it, given that their present partners are each others’ exes, but what we got in S07E01 of Koffee with Karan on Thursday was an unlikely, and solid, friendship between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.

The two surprised everyone with their easygoing chemistry and palpable buddy vibe. Alia revealed that Ranveer had tears in his eyes when she told him she was engaged to Ranbir Kapoor. Ranveer said how he had landed up on the sets of Gangubai Kathiawadi to support Alia on a particularly tough day of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

Ranveer ‘helped’ Alia choose part of her jewellery for her wedding; Alia revealed that husband Ranbir had asked her that what do Ranveer and she actually talk about. Tutu (Ranveer) and Lulu (Alia) as they call each other revealed that they are true ‘sakhis’, with host KJo saying that Ranveer has ‘the soul of a gossipy Punjabi aunty in his body’. His ‘name?’ Pammi!

PROPOSAL PLAN TO MIMICRY MAGIC

For the first time, Alia spoke about how she and Ranbir fell in love while shooting their film Brahmastra and how he proposed to her at Maasai Mara. Their wedding, an intimate affair, was held at home with Alia revealing that Ranbir was intently listening to every word uttered by the priest, while she only wanted to take sunset photos!

Talking about adjusting to wife Deepika Padukone’s relatively staid family, Ranveer reveals he has a completely different wardrobe — comprising ‘sober clothing’ like jeans and T-shirts — when he visits his in-laws in Bangalore. Wonder how the Padukone parents will react to the fact that Ranveer has a playlist for every kind of sex — romantic to rough to randy. In his words. Well!

The highlight of the episode was undoubtedly Ranveer doing a spot-on job of imitating some Bollywood actors. From Hrithik Roshan’s talk to Varun Dhawan’s walk, from Kartik Aaryan’s ‘pap face’ to Ajay Devgn’s swag to Aamir Khan’s trademark pose with his pillow... this was one hilarious segment.

‘BINGO’ FUN TO BORING RAPID FIRE

The newly introduced Koffee Bingo segment, in which the guests had to tick off some largely scandalous things they are guilty of, naturally had Ranveer in his element.

From confessing he has had quickies in his vanity van to the fact that he had woken up on the footpath once, RS was a riot. But what cracked up everyone was Alia’s revelation of her embarrassing email ID when she was 13 — punkbabe_21! Ranveer went inro hysterics for a good two minutes.

The Rapid Fire round, always the most controversial part of the show, which has plonked many a star in the middle of a controversy, has become highly sanitised, with none of the questions having any spark, let alone fire.

We did get some interesting responses like Ranveer calling himself “ass-man” given his “posterior passion” as Karan put it.

When asked to compare Deepika and Alia, Ranveer said that Alia had “more language proficiency” while Deepika had “better physical stature”.When asked the same question, Alia praised Ranveer’s “linguistic strength” while Ranbir is the better dancer.

What also caught our attention was Alia saying that she’s good friends with Ranbir’s exes, Deepika and Katrina. “I love them both and they love me too!”
