Samsung is looking at a future far beyond the usual monitors. The company has unveiled some high-end monitors and they take the competition to Apple and LG, two companies that have been offering colour accurate 5K monitors for creative professionals.

ViewFinity S9 is stunning to say the least. We are talking of a 27-inch model offering 5,120 x 2,880 resolution and a full DCI-P3 colour gamut, factory calibrated delta E less than or equal to two. The looks match that of Apple’s Studio Display and ships with Samsung’s 4K SlimFit webcam. Colour calibration matters on the monitor and Samsung says users can make adjustments using its SmartThings app or a phone camera in tandem with its “built-in Colour Calibration Engine”.

There are a few advantages over Apple’s Studio Display. There is no need to use a generic VESA mount to rotate it to use in portrait orientation, there is support for HDR (DisplayHDR 600) and it has HDMI and DisplayPort connections in addition to USB-C/Thunderbolt 4. DHDR 600 support means there is a degree of local dimming for the IPS panel’s backlight.

The monitor story for Samsung goes beyond ViewFinity S9. To get the best in gaming experience, there is the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 curved display aimed at delivering lifelike gaming imagery. Also introduced is the 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9.

It’s a ginormous panel featuring a Dual UHD resolution or it’s the equivalent of two 4K monitors sitting next to each other. Combined with a 1000R curve, the latest Odyssey Neo G9 offers a resolution of 7,680 x 2,160 with an aspect ratio of 32:9. The OLED screen illuminates each pixel separately and does not rely on a backlight, allowing a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio while delivering true RGB and true black without colour filters. There is also support for a refresh rate of up to 240Hz.
