Salt Lake Sector 1 has a new den now for Asian food lovers and connoisseurs. Located on the busy road near Ram Krishna Island, The Sumo’s (modern Asian restaurant) is a perfect place for all your Korean Barbeques and Sushi cravings. Spread across 2,500 sq ft, this 70-seater restaurant has a vibrant outdoor seating area and refreshingly spacious indoor designed in accordance with the Korean and Japanese aesthetics. The eatery specialises in Korean barbeques, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and food that simmers right in front of your eyes on hotpots on your table.

Before your mouth waters and you plan on dropping in, here’s a twist! The Asian food comes with a dash of fusion here, giving a whole new definition to Pizza and living up to its theme, which is being a modern Asian restaurant.

t2 tried out some of their signature dishes.

(Top left) The interior boasts of wooden hanging lights, reflecting traditional Japanese interior ideas. The chairs are made of iron with an outerbase of wood. “Iron makes the furniture sturdy while wood looks more appealing,” explained Priyanka. The golden cutlery and the golden ramen bowl have also been mindfully curated keeping the cuisines in mind. The purple walls keep the atmosphere fresh and vibrant. On one side, the wall is adorned with artificial purple flowers that instantly transport you to a Japanese garden full of Wisteria blossoms. There is a separate room where private gatherings of up to 18 guests can be held. The use of mirrors amplifies the space.

(Bottom left) Teriyaki Twist Poh-Kay Bowl is the traditional poke bowl and an absolute favourite from the Hawaiian cuisine. This healthy bowl of salad is loaded with veggies, and flavourful tofus tossed in Teriyaki sauce. You can go for chicken instead of tofus as well.

(Right) Veg Katsu Musubi: Sushi lovers are in for a treat once again! Layers of Sushi rice topped with a sweet spicy creamy sauce accompany crispy veg cutlet wrapped in nori sheet.

Gochujang Spicy Pizza: If you are a pizza lover, you’re in for an unexpected twist. This Korean paletteinspired Pizza called Gochujang Pizza comes loaded with veggies and chicken tossed in loads of Gochujang Sauce, the king ingredient of this item.

The Thai Seafood Hotpot has a brothy, steamy Tom Yum soup base filled with the goodness of veggies, prawns, squids, and chicken meatballs. There is a certain tanginess to this dish that cooks right in front of you as you pick up your favourite proteins from the hotpot right there.

“My initial plan was to open a cloud kitchen. My Dad was a chef, my primary inspiration for opening a restaurant. I have grown up eating fried rice, chilli chicken, white gravy noodles and what not! I have always remained inclined towards Asian Food. It is easy to digest too. The name Sumo’s because I have incorporated Su of Sushi and Mo of Momos. Sushi is my favourite and my brother loves momos. Many people would joke about the sport Sumo because of the heavy figures of the wrestlers. But it is their strength that helps them win the game. For me, this restaurant is my strength, reward and award,” said owner Priyanka Singh.
