The 48th International Salon organised by the Photographic Association of Dum Dum in a classroom at Motijheel College is one of the most fascinating exhibitions in recent years. Among the 91 exhibits colours have dominated the show.
Vietnam’s Hien Dang Quang has created a soothing monochromatic effect in At the morning, a mountain covered with various clouds with one little house on top of a hill. Many a Japanese wash painting can envy this photograph.
US-based Qui Tan Le’s Gone with the wind is the best nature photograph of the show. His imaginative use of a flower is quite absorbing. Another US lensman Liang James’ Summer shows a huge terrace cultivation. This reminds me of a famous photograph of Henry Cartier Brasson. Hong Kong’s Ho Chi-keung’s Big Waves (in picture) is a delightful creation. The beauty of the photograph lies in the two sea birds flying away in the left corner of the frame ? a picture with a neat balance of elements colour, composition, cohesion and, above all, simplicity.
In the black-and-whites, Hong Kong’s Wong Tak-Choi’s Advent of Storm is eye-catching in its beauty.
However, I’ve a minor complaint. The lighting and showcasing of the photographs should have been a little better to compliment their high standards.
