To celebrate the World Photography Day, the National Academy of Photography organised an exhibition at the Nandan complex. It was divided into four sections: history, display of old cameras, works of students and snaps from established photographers. In the last two sections black-and-white exhibits outnumbered the coloured ones.

Seniors’ vibrant visuals from wild life to our everyday life could be an eye-opener for the ‘gimmick gurus’. Utpal Sarkar’s top-angle colour shot showed young athletes are in a circular form with various sports gears scattered around them in a circular pool. It looked like a flower. Bikram Sen produced a grand graphic form in his black-and-white snap that betrayed a sensitive use of light and shade. Madhu Sarkar exhibited four rare pictures of Satyajit Ray shot during the silver jubilee of Pather Panchali.

The students’ section had a dominance of technical experiments. A charming table-top photograph, To be used, by Sandip Sen (in picture) showed a diagonal cohesive composition of three colourful pencils and the chips from them. The best of the lot was Lone Tree, a landscape by Arunava Bhattacharya. It created a serene ambience in which a lone silhouetted tree anchored a piece of land with a little water shade, lit by sun rays coming through the clouds.
