Arghya Sen, shy and introvert disciple of late Debabrata Biswas, has maintained a saintly indifference towards arclight while honing a distinguished gayaki peerless in all respect. Sricharaneshu celebrated the 50th year of Sen’s singing career in a glorious evening at Kalakunj (December 20). As Sumitra Sen and Buddhadeb Guha related personal anecdotes, Sen struck the introspective chord to begin his recital with Amare tumi ashesh karechho. Showing no sign of fatigue and that tremolo which threatened to mar his recent soirees, Sen continued to showcase his repertoire consisting of music of Tagore’s contemporaries. He signed off appropriately with personalized rendition of Jakhan parhbe na mor. Later Mira Gopalakrishnan, a Rabitirtha alumnus, displayed signs of maturity in a brief Rabindrasangeet recital.

Inspired by the secret language of colours and their power to create significant patterns of a musical nature, young geneticist-turned-painter Maushumi Mutsuddi’s abstract essays may have opened up new directions of non-representational, non-figurative ideations. Mounted at the Genesis Art Gallery, her experimental works, rendered mostly in vibrant yellow and blue, were a feast for the eye. The painter has sought, at least consciously, to imbue her canvas with any scientific knowledge of the natural patterns or designs of micro-organisms she might well have been tempted to picturise. In fact, Maushumi has entered the realm of art by being inspired by her love for folk-figurative delineations. Her script for adumbrating the pictorial space with dots and tiny lines seldom fails to heighten the aesthetic import of her pure designs.
