Q: I completed masters in computer applications in June 2006. Since then I have been working with a software company in the development team on JAVA / J2EE platform. I want to do a postgraduation in business management, but am not sure if it will help my career. Also, I do not know which institutes offer MBA for working people.

A: MBA is a professional degree and would definitely add to one’s professional qualification. There are various institutes across the country, including the top ones, that offer part-time MBA courses for working people. The decision to do an MBA would depend on the career you have chosen. If you intend to be in marketing, finance, human resources or any such field, securing an MBA degree would make sense.
Q:I am a 40-year-old ex-air force personnel. I joined the Indian Air Force at the age of 18 and retired at 38. I worked in fighter aircraft servicing and administration. I started working after Plus Two, but did BA from Calcutta University in 1991, a postgraduate diploma in IRPM from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1992 and MA in sociology from Kanpur University in 2006.
After retirement, I did a 16-week management course in export / import from the Enterprise Development Institute, Calcutta. I also have certifications from the Association of Mutual Funds in India and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority. However, I am yet to get a break and am totally confused as to which way to go. Currently, I am engaged in share trading but want to settle down permanently in some sector. Please advise.

A:It is interesting to see how you have acquired qualifications to enhance your career prospects. But you seem to have simply picked up what came your way and then tried to see if you could build a career around it. You should first assess your strengths and liking, and then plan a career that best suits you. Today there are a lot of opportunities for retired defence personnel. For example, the insurance industry is keen on employing such individuals in various verticals.
