Victors flex muscle at powerlift meet

Jamshedpur, June 29: Uttar Pradesh edged out Andhra Pradesh to emerge overall champions in the National Sub-junior Powerlifting Championship, which concluded at the eastern wing of the JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

While Uttar Pradesh garnered 110 points, Andhra Pradesh bagged 93 points. Tamil Nadu came third with 85 points.

Uttar Pradesh emerged victors with the boys securing 59 points and girls 51 points. Punjab boys and Andhra girls finished second with 47 and 48 points, respectively. Delhi boys and West Bengal girls took third place with 47 and 48 points respectively. Navjot Singh of Chandigarh and Sudha Kumari of Bihar were adjudged sub-junior strong man and girl of India, respectively.

Uttaranchal’s Shyam Singh Rana and Uttar Pradesh’s Pramila Yadav finished second. Chhattisgarh was declared the “best-disciplined team” in the championship organised by the Jharkhand Powerlifting Association. Tata Steel men with 56 points and Assam women with 57 points bagged the team championship titles in the Eastern India powerlifting meet, organised along with the sub-junior championships.

National Gym (53 points) and West Bengal (48 points) emerged runners-up in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Sudha Kumari of Bihar bagged a double title — strong girl of Eastern India as well as the same honour in the national meet. Binod Kumar of National Gym clinched the honour in the men’s category. Five national records were created earlier in the day. Amandeep Singh of Chhattisgarh created three records while Surajit Das of West Bengal and Ashish Kumar of Delhi created one each.
