Ranchi, April 2: Hundreds of students today laid siege to the Ranchi University headquarters demanding rescheduling of BA/BSc/BCom part III examination. Early this week, the university had announced that part III examination would begin from the last week of this month.

Students alleged that the university had announced the date of the examination without completing the syllabus. “As we have been told by our teachers, colleges should ensure at least 350 classes in each semester. But for part III, the university announced the examination after conducting only 120 classes in four months,” a student said.

University sources, however, said there was no such UGC provision to ensure 350 classes every semester. The UGC has stipulated that universities should ensure 180 days of classes a year.

“The university had instructed colleges to start part III classes soon after the part II examinations, but just because a few colleges did not comply with the diktat, it does not mean that courses have not been completed in other colleges,” sources said. According to univeristy sources, irate students today smashed flower pots in protest. Vice-chancellor S.S. Kushwaha said: “Doors of the university are always open to students, who come democratically with the right motive. There is no scope for hooliganism on the campus. “The way the students behaved with university officials forced us to think that they must have been instigated by some vested interest which does not want a healthy educational atmoshpere to prevail on the campus,” he said, adding that it was a matter of concern why students from only a few colleges demanded rescheduling of the examination.

According to univeristy sources, examination were announced early to regularise the session. “The Ranchi University had earned bad name during the Bihar days for it lagged behind several universities in the country. Now when the university wants to expedite the process of session regularisation, some people want to hamper the process,” a senior university official said.

Agreeing to re-schedule the examination dates after consulting college principals, Kushwaha assured the students that they would be given “sufficient” time to prepare for the examination. “We will conduct extra classes for students. We are planning to change the examination schedule and hold extra classes for the university’s primary concern is students’ welfare. But they should also co-operate with the university. They should have come to us when their colleges did not commence classes after the part II examination,’’ he said. In another development, university committee spokesperson S.S. Akhtar said it has asked Snehlata Sinha and Shajil Razi of Jameshpur Womens’ College to furnish relevant papers pertaining to their seniority and ensure personal appearance in the next meeting.
