TOOTH TRUTH: Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur where the test to verify a cricketer's age will be held on April 24

Jamshedpur: Budding cricketers whose physique don't match their age can't take part in the upcoming inter-district tournament starting on May 1.

Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) will conduct physical verification of Under-16 players in Deoghar (April 21), Ranchi (April 22), Daltonganj (April 23) and Jamshedpur (April 24).

In steel city, the test will be held at Keenan Stadium.

A three-member committee will conduct the exercise.

"Players whose body symmetry don't match with their age will not be allowed to participate in the inter-district tournament. The third molar tooth of the players will also be verified," JSCA vice-president Aseem Kumar Singh said.

Over 500 candidates are expected to go through the process.

According to Singh, physical verification is a precautionary step to ensure that no overage player from Jharkhand take part in the Vijay Merchant Trophy organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

He said the JSCA didn't have the required apparatus to practically verify the age of the players.

"So we need to physically verify if the age of the players are genuine or not. Even a slight doubt means they will be debarred from playing the inter-district event. Molar tooth will also determine whether a candidate's age was genuine."

"We will assess the players on the basis of their performance in the inter-district tournament. A list of 45-50 players will be prepared for the age verification programme to be conducted by BCCI-nominated expert at Orchid Hospital in Ranchi. X-rays of wrist and elbow joints will be taken. The X-ray reports will be evaluated by the BCCI," Singh explained.

The verification programme is usually held in Ranchi in September and the BCCI sends the list of players who have passed the tests the following month.

"We are able to then stitch out a state squad for the 2018-19 season for the Vijay Merchant Trophy," Singh added.

The senior JSCA official said players who failed the verification programme would be disqualified for two years. "Such cricketers will not be allowed to participate in tournaments conducted by us," Singh added.

He said players who had already undergone the verification test would not be required to reappear but such players would only be allowed to participate in the inter-district event if they were eligible for the under-16 category for the 2018-19 season as per the BCCI's assessment.
