Ranchi, June 30: Various political parties and social groups in the state capital on Monday remembered Sidho, Kanho, Chand and Bhairav — the four Santhal siblings who led the Santhal Hul of 1855 against the British from the front and laid down their lives.
While some groups, including Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), revered the martyrs by garlanding the statues of the fighters at Sidho-Kanho Park in the city, others organised meetings to discuss the relevance of the historic event.
“The uprising has inspired the people of the state to oppose any oppression, exploitation and suppression just as the Santhal brothers did,” said Janardan Prasad, the state secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)-Liberation.
Prasad said exploitation, suppression and oppression by the Britons had compelled the Santhals to rise against the rulers of the time.
“The same situation prevails even today in the state. People of Jharkhand are fighting battle for their land, forest, water and air,” he said, pointing out that displacement due to the various projects looms large over the people here.
The participants in the meet also remembered other martyrs, including Mahendra Singh and Kameswar Yadav.
