Dumka, June 16: Rohini, a sleepy hamlet about 5km from the Deoghar township, was buzzing with activity today.

The village was remembering its martyrs and freedom fighters who were a part of the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. A rich tribute was paid to the heroes in a colourful programme at Shahid Sthal.

Deputy development commissioner of Deoghar S.N. Mandilwal graced the occasion as the chief guest. Chotalal Modi, the president of Freedom Fighters’ Association, Deoghar, and freedom fighter Jal Narayan Singh were also present. A shawl and an umbrella were given as mementos to the family members of 13 freedom fighters.

While Mandilwal announced that the district administration would wrap up the repair work of the road from Basbadehi to Rohini Shahid Sthal (martyrs’ ground) soon, Singh urged the youngsters to come forward and serve the nation.

Rohini is known for the martyrdom of Amanat Ali, Salamat Ali and Seikh Haroon — three army personnel in the mount battalion at the army camp of Rohini, who had revolted against the British.

On June 16, 1857, the three were hanged from a tree for attacking British army officers. Every year, Rohini commemorates the martyrdom of the three brave soldiers on June 16.
