Jamshedpur, March 4: Dearth of teachers, in all constituent colleges under Ranchi University (RU), would soon be a thing of the past.

Recently all city colleges began a recruitment drive for permanent faculty members in several departments.

The move marks a major step, as after a gap of 15 years, constituent colleges under RU would see recruitment of permanent teachers.

“This weekend we received a letter from Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) via the RU headquarters, which stated that the recruitment of teachers would be completed at the earliest. We have informed all colleges of the same,” said S.S. Razi, the co-ordinator of the RU branch office in Jamshedpur.

No recruitment of permanent faculty took place for many years as the university was waiting for a final approval from the state cabinet.

Over the years almost all colleges had to face acute shortage. There were cases where just one teacher taught a single department with over 1,000 students.

“Not only during the lectures, but we faced problems in organising other co-curricular activities as well,” said Shukla Mohanty, the principal of Jamshedpur Women’s College. The college has received the nod to appoint a total of 12 teachers in subjects such as chemistry, Hindi, philosophy and political science.

At Jamshedpur Workers’ College about 10 teachers have been appointed for the sanctioned 14 posts in subjects like Hindi, chemistry, philosophy and in commerce.

“The teachers would join on a pay scale of Rs 8,000-Rs 12,000. The teacher would be eligible only after clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET) or Jharkhand Eligibility Test (JET),” added Razi. If the candidates don’t possess NET or JET qualifications, then they should be PhD degree holders, he added.

“We had a tough time managing the large batch of students,” said Snehalata Sinha, the principal of Graduate School College for Women. There, about 11 teachers have been appointed out of the 17 posts sanctioned.

At Graduate School College for Women major recruitment took place in commerce, mathematics and Bengali.
