Ranchi, Nov. 22: Taking a cue from its counterpart in Tamil Nadu, the Jharkhand Legal Services Authority (Jhalsa) is gearing up to settle around 10 lakh cases at the second National Lok Adalat to be held in the state on December 6.
While last-minute meetings with different government and non-government agencies are on, details of cases are being sought from advocates of Jharkhand High Court and district courts.
The Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority had set a record by settling around 13 lakh cases in the first National Lok Adalat held in November last year. Jhalsa disposed of 1.06 lakh cases in the first round.
“The objective of the National Lok Adalat is to reduce the burden of cases on litigants and courts. The idea is to settle cases in the litigation and pre-litigation stages,” said Jhalsa secretary S.K. Dubey.
Conducted under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority, the lok adalat will be supervised by Jharkhand High Court judges. Jhalsa will also take up cases pending before quasi-judicial authorities like circle officers, block development officers, sub-divisional officers and deputy commissioners. Banks, insurance companies, electricity board and government departments have also been brought within the ambit of National Lok Adalat .
This apart, Jhalsa will hear cases involving government welfare schemes that have not been executed in favour of beneficiaries. “One such welfare scheme is related to financial aid provided for medical treatment,” said a judicial official, adding the adalat would also redress the grievances of beneficiaries.
“The deputy commissioners and superintendents of police, along with secretaries of different departments, have been instructed to ensure maximum participation of litigants and full cooperation of government employees,” Dubey said.
