A BSNL tower in Jamshedpur |
Jamshedpur, Aug. 25: Mobile users subscribing to BSNL services in the steel city can bid goodbye to beeps and blips while talking.
The leading mobile telephony company will install 20 more base transceiver station towers across the steel city to ensure better connectivity among its customers. In layman terms, a base transceiver station facilitates wireless communication between a handset and a network.
BSNL Jamshedpur Secondary Switching Area general manager A.K. Pahi said once the additional towers were set up, the service provider will be able to deliver “flawless connectivity” to customers. “We are going to set up 20 new towers after a meticulous survey of areas with connectivity problems. Currently we have 60 towers. By November, the number will rise to 80, making mobile connectivity perfect,” Pahi told The Telegraph.
Pahi added that new towers were needed to make 3G phone services, which allow users to connect their phones to the internet, more effective.
Sources said the decision to set up more towers was taken after data collection on connectivity problems between BSNL cell phones and landline and vice-versa. Complaints from specific areas prompted BSNL authorities to carry out a survey, zeroing on weak zones.
A senior BSNL official said that unlike private telecom companies operating in the area, BSNL must follow standard norms before installing a tower. “A team of senior technical officials has to inspect each site and take into account factors like hazards, inhabitant count, among others,” he said.
BSNL delivers connectivity to Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan through 130 towers, of which 60 were in Jamshedpur and the rest in townships such as Chaibasa, Chakradharpur, Ghatshila, Chandil, Jadugora, Musabani, Bahragora and Chakulia, as well as in rural areas.
