Survey on justice delivery system

A 26-member team, carrying out a survey to identify loopholes in the judiciary system and reasons behind the high rate of pendency of cases, today assembled at Ranchi civil courts to discuss its preliminary findings.

Ranchi, July 23: A 26-member team, carrying out a survey to identify loopholes in the judiciary system and reasons behind the high rate of pendency of cases, today assembled at Ranchi civil courts to discuss its preliminary findings.

The team members, comprising students and professors of National University for Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), judicial officers, shared their experience with judicial commissioner, Ranchi, A.V. Singh and director of Judicial Academy Gautam Kumar Choudhary.

Sponsored by the Union ministry of law and justice, the project was launched around two months ago and will take another 10 months to complete.

One of the team members, Dr Shyamla, an assistant professor of NUSRL, said: "The research project is part of a nationwide initiative launched to ascertain the reasons behind delay in delivery of justice."

The Jharkhand team is mainly focusing on courts across 24 districts and find out the ground realities in the state.

Shyamla, however, refused to share details of their findings so far. "We are not supposed to share any details regarding the project without prior permission from the Union ministry," she said.

NUSRL alumnus Abhinav Prakash, chief judicial magistrate Diwakar Pandey and sub-judges cum judicial magistrates of Ranchi Deepak Barnwal and Kanwaljeet Chopra are also members of the research team.

Bhavna, a NUSRL student and part of the team, said their experience suggested a lot of work required to be done to improve the judicial system. "I have found a lot of difference between theoretical and practical aspects of the judiciary system," she added.
