An international film festival about uranium mining, held across countries, will hold screenings in six Indian cities including Jamshedpur this time.

Shriprakash, a Ranchi-based national award winning filmmaker and India director for the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF)-2014 said this time, the festival will begin screenings at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, from Thursday and conclude at Karim City College, Jamshedpur, on April 27.

While the festival will stop over in Ahmedabad for two days (March 19-20), it will station itself for three days in the remaining five cities of Hyderabad, Manipal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Jamshedpur.

This is the second time that IUFF is travelling to India. The festival began in Rio de Janeiro in 2010 and held screenings across India last year before moving to Germany and the US.

IUFF had then covered 10 cities including Ranchi, said Shriprakash, adding that Jamshedpur was included this time with the mass communication department of Karim City College as associate organiser.

“Those who make films about uranium mining and related issues do not normally get a chance to screen them on television. This festival provides them a chance to screen their films and felicitate interaction among like-minded people,” Shriprkash explained.

Over 50 films, including Shriprakash’s own Gere Dan on uranium mining in Mali in Africa, will be screened during the festival. Among the many presentations are a Russian comedy and a German cartoon film on the issue of uranium mining.

“We have been organising film festivals for students. Such films will help widen their horizons,” said Neha Tiwari, head of the mass communication department of Karim City College, which will host the festival in the steel city.
