Ranchi, June 1: After a long wait during which they claim to have lost several lucrative job offers, boxer Aruna Mishra and archer Jhano Hansda have finally agreed to accept the post of sub-inspectors in the state police.

Mishra today met top officials at the police headquarters to enquire about her placement status. When she reminded them that the state government had promised her the post of a DSP, they explained to her that appointing someone directly to the DSP rank was beyond the capacity of the state government.

According to them, the home department can only recruit constables and sub-inspectors and promote the sub-inspectors to inspector rank. Here, the DSPs are being appointed by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC).

She would, therefore, first join as a sub-inspector. The home department would then promote her to inspector rank at the earliest. After getting concurrence from the JPSC, her case will again be forwarded to the JPSC for another promotion to the DSP rank. The officials admitted that in Jharkhand there were no set rules to facilitate appointment of players of proven skill.

The state had not even a fixed quota for accommodating sportspersons in different jobs. Under existing rules, this was the only way sportspersons could get a police job in Jharkhand. Hansda, too, has agreed to join the same way.

Though Mishra and her husband played a little hard to get in the beginning, saying Mishra had missed out on many offers, later they agreed.
