Ranchi, March 1: What?s in a name? Ask the Election Commission, which will tell you that names can delay notification of formation of an Assembly.

Unless the new Assembly is notified, the governor cannot invite any party to form the government.

Some names have forced the EC scan nomination papers to find out the correct spelling of some of the new members of the Jharkhand Assembly.

The confusion arose in the EC today as some new and old members have names that can be spelt differently while many also write their names differently in English and Hindi.

Though the spelling makes no difference, the EC, which is particular about the credibility of its notification, preferred to scan the original documents of many successful candidates.

Election Commission secretary R.K. Shrivastava, who is here to notify the formation of the Assembly on behalf of the commission, state chief electoral officer A.K. Pandey, special CEO Sudhir Tripathy and additional CEO S.S. Meena scanned many documents to find the correct names this afternoon, sources said.

Sources said the subordinate employees had already finalised the notifications, when the senior EC officials found to their dismay that many MLAs write their names differently.

Thus, the hunt to find the correct names began.

The most confusing name was of former health minister Dinesh Kumar Sadangi.

The Baharagora MLA of BJP writes his surname as Sarangi in Hindi while in English he writes D instead of R.

The other interesting case was of CPI-ML MLA from Badogar Binod Kumar Singh. Son of the slain CPI-ML MLA, Mahendra Prasad Singh, writes only Ku. instead of the full Kumar.

Similarly, the JMM candidate, who defeated the former energy minister Lalchand Mahto in Dumri writes his name as Jagarnath instead of Jagannath.

Jagannathpur Independent MLA Madhu Koda who was an MLA of BJP in the last house writes his surname as Koda in English, but in Hindi he becomes Kora.

There was confusion over names like that of JMM Maheshpur MLA Sufal Marandi, JMM MLA from Shikaripara Nalin Soren, whether it was Nalin or Nalini, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy and Independent MLA from Jarmundi Hari Narayan Roy? if they were Rai or Roys. Though Roy, who is always in news, had silently accepted the change of spelling his name from Roy to Rai, the EC wants to make no mistake in spelling his name.
